That means we are half way there to meeting our little boy. We are so excited and busy getting our home ready to welcome him. I have a feeling this last 20 weeks is going to fly. We are coming up on my favorite time of year and with all of the holidays and vacations, January will be here before we know it.
At 20 weeks I am:
- Feeling great!
- I really haven't gained that much weight but my belly is really sticking out!
- Can't sleep very well (my hips are killing me!)
- Have started the name selection
- Is motivated again to get to the gym
- Decided (with help from Aaron) the nursery theme will be vintage airplanes
- Has strangers ask how far along I am...I love it
- Know we are having a boy
Here is my 20 week picture. I'm getting big!
Progress so far. I really popped between 15 & 20 weeks!
This little guy is so active! It feels like he is doing somersaults all day long. It is the most incredible feeling.
Now, for some needed advice...
I'm thinking it's time to start a registry. So, what is one thing that you; couldn't live without, one thing that was nice but not necessary, and one thing that was a waste of money? Plus if you have any other tips on making a registry I would love them.
Thanks!

One thing we got with Chloe that was a LIFESAVER was a bouncer. It was amazing for us. We had so many problems in the beginning and it was the only way we got any sleep the whole first week! Plus it was so nice to have her sleep in their during the day (until we started getting her to sleep in her crib) and being able to have her right there and make sure she's ok. I hope you guys get one! They're the best!!
You should REALLY consider registering on Amazon! I didn't but wish I did! I have bought so much on there because they have free 2 day shipping a lot of the time and it's so easy for out-of-towners to send you stuff thru Amazon too. You can really find everything on Amazon (and usually cheaper) than B-R-Us or Target. I registered only at Target because it seemed cheaper. Just my 2 cents! I was too lazy (tired) to walk around a store for hours registering. Online was heavenly!
PS - Amazon Mom has the best deals on diapers if you choose to subscribe and save. I wish I would have known sooner so I hope that helps! :)
You are SO cute, love your shadow pics!
Must haves for us was the swing. I would get rid of everything in the beginning for the swing. All four loved it. Also my Snap-N-Go. Probably the third best invention(only to the swing and iPad) ever made.
What I loved but could live without is the Boppy and wipe warmer. When I first heard about a wipe warmer I thought oh please! But in the middle of the night when you hit that little butt with a freezing cold wipe that baby is UP and screamin.
What I thought I needed and was a complete waste of money was...diaper champ/genie, baby bath and nursing G's.
For your hip pain try a belly support from Motherhood Maternity. Saved my life with the twins, wish I would have had it with the other two. And something you will need for yourself for after... granny panties and epsom salt. Trust me. :)
Must Have: Baby Bouncer (mine has cute little bears on it), Swing (try to get one that plugs in so you don't have to replace batteries all the time), Little play mat when they get a little older, Johnny Jump-up (both of my kids loved it and would spend forever it in).
Liked but Could Live Without: Boppy (I just used a down pillow and it worked so much nicer because I could move it to any position I needed to), Baby Monitor (cause my kids cry loud), Bumbo (nice but my babies only lasted 10 mins max in it)
Waste: Baby bath (we just bathe them in the sink)
Good luck! You are going to be the BEST mom!!!
Well I'm not a mom but I've heard enough from my mom friends to know that everyone has different opinions. I would recommend registering for basic things that you KNOW you will need & use. Try to get gift cards that you can use for the other stuff later. I would also suggest borrowing stuff like a bouncer and swing, etc...for a week or so until you know that it's something you want & will use. Then you can go get it with your gift cards. (you don't want to waste $$ on something that your baby may not like or want, you know?)
I agree with all things said, especially Soni's comment. Every baby is so different. And so is every parent. I could write a novel, but i'm on my phone :). Lets just chat or get together if you want. I'm sure I have my registry spreadsheet I made with Brighton.
Soni is so wise!!! I was mentally making my list trying to think of the most helpful advice and then read Soni's comment. You've already gotten the most helpful advice! We still have a swing somewhere that you could borrow, and a bouncer-type thing and 'boppy' pillow.
We definitely did NOT nead a changing table (who wants to go all the way to the baby's room when he fits on your lap and with a burp cloth or changing pad under him, you're good to go (most of the time--at least you're at home if he's a 'shooter'). And diaper genies don't work! Better to wrap the diapers in a grocery bag nice and tight and/or take them directly to the dumpster.
The carseat that clicks into the stroller was a must for me. That way I didn't have to wake up my little bundle of joy when switching from car to walking . . . . Good luck! So happy for you!
I agree with everyone who has said a bouncy seat. A must! I bought a used diaper champ when Lara was born and love it. Just use regular plastic bags in it and it definitely keeps the mess and smell down. I also agree with not needing a baby bath. I've always showered with them or just bathed them in the bathtub. And now with Mariella, she just bathes with the girls (one of them holds her while I wash her). Definitely get some sort of wrap or carrier. I have 3 different kinds and each one is good for different uses. A lot of people like Baby Bjorn, but I wasn't a fan. And, of course, you need non-toxic household products! I cannot live without my Melaleuca products. They are definitely safer than anything you can buy in the grocery store.
I'm so excited for you!!!!!!!!
I think I am in the minority here. We used very very little baby gear. No swing, bumbo, pack n play, changing table, etc. We do have an Ikea baby bath ($6) for when they are very small. After a few months we usually took them in the shower with us until they could sit up and just sit in the bath tub. We were given a little reclining chair that rocked. That was useful for when making dinner or something. I guess my advice would be similar to Soni's. Start small with the absolute necessities-diapers, blanket, a place to sleep, and borrow and buy after that.
Vintage airplanes! That is SO cute!
Amen to everything Erin said - times 3 kids.
In my opinion, a diaper changing table is a MUST!! Even if it's just a long dresser that comes waist high, it is so nice to not have to bend down on the floor/bed/couch/wherever ten times a day! It's also very convenient to have all of your diapering supplies in one place so that you don't always have to go scramble to find them. A changing table was my MUST HAVE.
Also, a swing... Owen loved it.
I might be alone, but I couldn't live without my diaper genie. It cut WAY down on the smell. I would also take plastic grocery bags with me so that if I had to change a stinky diaper in a public bathroom it would cut down on the smell.
Also, pack extra plastic bags in your diaper bag so that if baby has an accident - spit up, diaper, etc. - you have a separate place to put the soiled clothes.
Congratulations! I will let you know my answers to those questions in about a week! :)
Definately every mother and child is different, so hope this helps!
Must Have:
Weird but a must have for me was the little net thing with a handle. When they begin to teeth or even eat, it comes in handy to put frozen food in. I actually never put food in it because it was sooooo messy, but I did ALWAYS put ice cubes in them for Adalie. 1. During the summer it was perfect because I always felt it helped to keep her hydrated. 2. She loved it and it would keep her busy F-O-R-E-V-E-R. And 3 I actually used it for a first aid treatment the other day. Adalie fell and bit her lip open, she wouldn't let me put ice on it, but she would suck on the ice cube I put in it when I gave it to her. It was perfect!!
Also a nursing cover. I made mind and loved it. I also LOVED having a baby bean-bag. I bought beans to make my own for the next one. Lansinoh nursing pads, they stick in place on your bra rather than moving around like all the other ones.
Complete waste: Diaper warmer. Reusable nursing pads. Justin is all earth friendly and so am I, but when you go out for the first time with your sweet husband since you had the baby and your sitting at the movies and all of the sudden something makes you let down...it's not cool to have milk going everywhere. Sorry if it's TMI.. but it will happen. Luckily I had the Lansioh nursing pads in my purse as backup!
Could live without: I am ify on my diaper genie. We have a love/hate relationship. I love it, but I hate that I have to buy inserts for them so that you can actually use the genie.. and they aren't that cheap. I didn't feel like I used my boppy all that much. I just use pillows and improvised when needed. And those things didn't bother me...
Good luck in shopping.
Congratulations! You look wonderful, so excited for your family to grow!
ACK .. i wrote a big ole comment and my computer lost the internet connection haha grr!
anyways ... i recommend getting a glider (or some sort of rocking chair) for you and the baby for feedings. i liked to sit some place else besides the bed for feeding, so I had a glider, a table with a little lamp, and a cd player to play baby einstein classical music while I fed my kids.
its important for you and the baby to BOTH be comfy during all the adjustments, because if you are tense and stress so will the baby. so relaxed environments i highly recommend! :) diapers diapers diapers ... i would have on registry ... and not just newborn size but alllll the sizes! diapers are expensive and this could help save money in the long run. maybe somebody will be creative and make you a diaper cake!
also i recommend putting clothes on the registry, this is another must for the child, and also can be expensive, especially for how much the child will be growing! don't forget to calcuate the age with the season if you were to put clothes for your baby boy for older months!
also make sure the gift cards don't expire and if they do its at least not for another 3-6 months after. you won't be leaving the house much at the beginning, because you will be too exhausted to want to go anywhere.
but like the others said, borrow the things first from others to see if it is worth to buy the swing and bouncer stuff. some babies love it, and others would rather just sit in their crib and look up at the moblie - also i put black and white 4x6 photos of us in my girls crib so when she turns her head she can practice focusing in on things, and also my kids didn't feel like they were ever alone.
anyways ... congrats once again! and don't get overwhelmed with everything. when it comes down to it, the baby really doesn't care what you will buy for him, as long as he has you and your hubby he will be happy for the most part.
